The declutter checklist to run before every photo shoot
A five-minute-per-room checklist you can hand to sellers.
Buyers see everything in a photo, especially what you forgot to move. Give this list to the seller a few days before the shoot.
Every room
- Clear at least half of the surfaces: counters, tables, dressers.
- Remove personal photos, magnets and children's art.
- Put away cords, chargers and remotes.
- Take out trash and recycling bins.
- Make beds with clean, neutral bedding.
- Open all blinds and curtains.
- Replace burned-out bulbs, and match the color temperature.
Kitchen
- Clear the counters except for one or two items, such as a fruit bowl or a plant.
- Empty the sink and put away the dish rack.
- Remove magnets and papers from the fridge.
- Wipe appliances and cabinet fronts.
Bathrooms
- Clear everything from counters and the tub or shower.
- Hang fresh towels. Close the toilet lid.
- Remove bath mats and trash cans.
Living areas
- Remove extra furniture until the room feels open.
- Straighten pillows and throws.
- Hide the TV cords and turn the TV off.
Bedrooms and closets
- Clear the floor and under the bed.
- Neaten closets. Pack half of the clothes.
Exterior
- Mow, edge and sweep.
- Put away hoses, toys, bins and grills.
- Move cars out of the driveway.
- Clean windows and the front door.
When you cannot declutter in real life
If the seller cannot clear a room in time, a digital declutter can help. It is not a substitute for cleaning, and it must not hide damage or condition issues.
A tidy home also shows better in person. Do the real work where you can, and use digital tools for the rest.
